Best Vegan Food in Playa del Carmen

Jim and I went vegetarian together at the beginning of fall in 2011. In 2012, we decided to go vegan while we were living in Playa del Carmen. At the time, vegan restaurants where only starting to pop up in town. I remember how ordering food without dairy in it was a lot more uncommon in restaurants. Now in 2017, there are many more options for vegetarians, vegans, and even raw-vegans in Playa del Carmen.

We went on a vegan food hunt to let you know about our personal favorite places that serve vegan food in Playa del Carmen.

1- La Senda Vegana:

La Senda is located on 10th avenue, very close to all the bars and night clubs. Their menu is completely vegan and they have some raw-vegan items as well. Last time we were there, I wanted to order my favorite dish from their menu but noticed they didn’t have it any longer. Fortunately, they were very kind to make their last “Tacos de Tinga” for me. I was devastated to learn that they were taking them off the menu. I am writing about them hoping that, if you go to La Senda and ask for these tacos, they will bring them back. Some of the raw-vegan items on their menu are: nori rolls, pesto pasta, cheesecake, and cacao truffles.

2- Marvin’s Burgers:

This restaurant is located on fifth avenue, but it is far away from all the stores and restaurants. Their menu consists of vegan burgers, vegan hot dogs and one brand of natural sodas. We wanted to try their jackfruit burger but jackfruit was not in season when we were there. We heard a lot about this place before deciding to go. It is not my favorite because their menu is very small but it was definitely good and I would absolutely go back.

3- The Pitted Date:

The newest vegan restaurant in Playa del Carmen is The Pitted Date. In this bakery and coffeeshop, you will find all kinds of vegan goods. Their menu includes salads, paninis, burritos, omelets, desserts, juices, smoothies and more. I had a cold matcha latte with coconut milk, and their mushroom panini with vegan eggs. Jim had the breakfast burrito. A flour tortilla filled with beans and quinoa. It comes with a small side of guacamole and pico de gallo (chopped mexican sauce). The only downside of this restaurant is that their prices are mildly extortionate.

4- Bio & Natural:

This is another of the most famous vegan restaurants in Playa del Carmen. Their menu is varied with quinoa bowls, pita sandwiches, soups, salads, ice cream and much more. The hummus they make is out of this world. Bio & Natural is also on the expensive side but the food here is very good. They have 3 locations in downtown Playa del Carmen. Each restaurant has a store right next door where they sell most of the vegan ingredients they use in their cooking.

5- Clorofila:

This restaurant is located almost right across from La Ceiba de la 30. All they serve here is vegan, plus they have some raw-vegan options. And, even though we were not that impressed with their food, they have delicious desserts. My favorite, the  “Mil Hojas de Pera” (Pear Strudel). I couldn’t stop thinking about it for weeks. It was THAT delicious, you have to try it.

6- Corazón de Melón*:

Vegan waffles! It’s all I can say. Although when we ordered them their waffle machine was not working so they came in pancake shape. These waffles are made with oatmeal flour, amaranth, and banana. They were perfectly sweetened and filling. The menu at Corazón de Melón is rather small. They have smoothies and burgers which are mostly vegetarian but can be easily made vegan. This restaurant is located on Colosio Avenue; closer to the residential areas of the city.

*They do serve meat and other non vegetarian food at this restaurant. Make sure you let them know about your food choices or allergies beforehand.

7- 100% Natural*:

What I like the most from this place is the “Tofusio” tacos. Three tofu tacos prepared with just the right amount of spice and served with guacamole and a salad. They also have a killer “Ceviche de Zetas” (Wild Mushroom Ceviche). The flavor of this ceviche is quite different than regular fish ceviche. It has bell peppers, wild mushrooms, lime, and coconut. Which gives this dish a sweet and delicious flavor.

8- La Ceiba de la 30*:

This is another place with good smoothies. My favorite one (named “Xel-Ha”) has papaya, banana, orange juice and granola. Here you can find hamburgers, burritos, chilaquiles, wraps, salads, pastas and more. This tiny restaurant is very popular because there is a market located right by it. Here you can find everything from fresh produce, to imported items. They have a wide variety of grains, seeds, spices, and even some meat alternatives.

9- Nativo*:

They have a lot of vegetarian options as well as some vegan ones and their smoothies are THE BEST in town. My favorite smoothie there is called "Ojito de Agua" (translation: natural pool, literally "little eye of water") and it has guava, chaya (a type of spinach), pineapple, and orange juice. Their veggie enchiladas verdes (green enchiladas) are also tasty. Make sure you order them without cheese and without sour cream to make them vegan.

10- Tepoznieves:

This is our favorite ice cream place in town. Tepoznieves gained fame due to its unique flavors and combinations. Tepoznieves uses natural and simple ingredients in their amazing artisan ice cream. Most of what they serve has dairy in it, but they do have a section of water based ice creams. With flavors like: tangerine, hibiscus, watermelon, dragon fruit, cucumber, and pineapple. Tepoznieves is located on Constituyentes avenue, between fifth and tenth avenue. Look for the colorful fruit decorations on their walls and ceiling and you will find it.

This list doesn’t include all of the places in Playa del Carmen where you can find vegan food. There are tons of juice bars, salad places, and sandwich stands I didn't cover in this post. But these are our favorites and the ones you must try when you visit Playa del Carmen.

Have you been to any of these? Do you have any other suggestions? Let us know in the comments!
