010 – Español Mexicano vs Español de España | Mexican Spanish vs Spain Spanish with Notes in Spanish

This week, Ben and Marina from Notes in Spanish join Jim and May to talk about the differences between Spanish and culture in Mexico and Spain.

Ben, an Englishman, and Marina, a Madrileña (from Madrid, Spain), started the first Spanish learning podcast back in 2006. Not only do they host an incredibly popular podcast, but their work also inspired Jim and May to start an online business. Needless to say, it is a huge honor to have them on the podcast.

In the episode, the two couples discuss the distinctive dialects of Mexican and Spain Spanish, as well as their similarities and differences.

Ben and Jim share their experiences as foreigners in Mexico and Spain, respectively, as well as assimilating into new cultures.

Spanglish is a topic of interest this week too since the multi-cultural couples both speak English. May talks about how there is plenty of English mixed into Mexican Spanish due to the proximity to the United States. But what about in Spain? Listen as Ben and Marina discuss how much English factors into their everyday conversation.

There’s plenty of laughing over the different words and phrases that come up during this episode and how that’s part of what makes languages fun and fascinating.

This episode covers a lot – just listening to both sides speak will help you to differentiate between native speakers from Mexico and Spain. And you’ll learn a bit of local slang too!
