023 – La Independencia de México | Mexico’s Independence

Ever heard of “El Grito?” Does “¡Viva México!” sound familiar? How about Miguel Hidalgo or “el Pípila”?

Learn about these important figures in the history of Mexico’s Independence Day in this week’s episode.

Listen as Jim and May break down not only how Mexicans celebrate their independence, but why they fought for it in the first place. You’ll gain a new understanding of Mexico after learning about how the country began.

The city of Guanajuato played a major role in the war. Witness this for yourself by seeking out all the statues and even visiting the Alhóndiga de Granaditas, essentially a fortress, located in the middle of the city, now setup as a museum.

May explains all the prominent individuals of the time, such as Miguel Hidalgo, José María Morelos, el Pípila, Ignacio Allende, y más!

She also goes into detail about the caste system resulting from the relations of different groups of the time. Learn the difference between los españoles, los mestizos, los criollos, los castizos, etc. There’s a name for everything, but the more Spanish blood you had, the better off in society you tended to be.

Check out the video linked below called “Guanajuato’s Silver Mining History” to see Jim and May actually in Guanajuato, sharing many of these facts as well.
