056 – Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo is upon us yet again. Do you have plans with your friends to celebrate at your favorite Mexican restaurant with mountains of tacos? Or possibly at home with lots of margaritas and maybe a sombrero or two?
If so, Jim and May are here this week to ask you a few questions. Why do you really celebrate Cinco de Mayo? What do you think the importance of the holiday is?
Many Americans actually think that Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day, but that would be incorrect. Mexican Independence Day is September 16!
May 5th commemorates the Mexican victory over the French in 1862 in the Battle of Puebla.
Jim and May give you the run-down of what happened during the struggle between Mexico and France at that time.
May also jokingly tells of her surprise when she came to the US and saw everyone celebrating Cinco de Mayo with lots of drinking and tacos. She was so confused because they don’t even celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Mexico.
Turns out – we might just make up a few extra excuses to party around here!
