Accommodations

We want you to be comfortable during your trip. That’s why we choose Casa Terraza as our retreat homebase.

Casa Terraza is a spacious four story building with one apartment on each floor. Each apartment has a full kitchen bathroom/s dining area. The terraza has two dining tables and a large lounge seating area. There is a washing machine, bbq and washroom on the terraza. There is no elevator.

The Space

The apartments have high-speed wifi, security cameras, electronic keyless entry and the rooftop Terraza for entertaining, relaxing or just taking in the scenery. There is a sofa bed in three apartments with a linen chest. The terraza is four flights up from the main door and the views are of the old train station and the pantheon.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Getting Settled

Day one will be a relaxed day as we get settled in. We’ll introduce ourselves and get everything in place for a busy week of lessons and activities in the city.

We’ll enjoy a welcome dinner where we’ll have time to get to know each other more and talk about the plans for the week.

Day 2: Greetings and Goodbyes & Casual Sightseeing

After breakfast, we’ll go over a lesson on Greetings and Goodbyes in Spanish. After the main lesson, we’ll break the class into two small groups according to everyone’s Spanish level for extra practice and more personalized attention. We’ll have lunch at a restaurant downtown followed by casual sightseeing in downtown Guanajuato.

When we’re walking around the town, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to practice in real life what you learned in today’s lesson. The rest of the day is free for you to enjoy the city on your own or rest. There’s an optional activity about trying traditional Mexican drinks at a bar.

Day 3: Food and History Tour & Self Introductions

Day three starts with an exciting Mexico Street Food and History Tour led by a local. Laura will tell you about historical facts about the city as we enjoy the local cuisine. Bring comfortable shoes! We’ll be doing lots of walking, but it’ll be worth it.

We’ll go back home for a short siesta break, followed by a lesson on Self Introductions and Talking about Yourself. After the lesson, we’ll break the group into two smaller groups for extra practice. The rest of the day is free for you to enjoy the city on your own or rest. We have an optional activity planned for those who want to experience more of Guanajuato.

Day 4: Ordering a Meal & El Museo Iconográfico del Quijote

After breakfast, we’ll go over a lesson on How to Order a Meal in Spanish. Get ready to learn about Mexican table etiquette and some of the most traditional dishes of the country. We’ll have our second lesson in smaller groups and then we’ll go out to an authentic Mexican restaurant to practice what you’ve learned.

After lunch we’ll visit the Iconographic Quijote Museum. The rest of the day is free for you to enjoy the city on your own or rest. We have an optional game night planned at our home-base for you to learn lots of vocabulary and to learn more about Mexican culture.

Day 5: Shopping in Spanish & Visit to the Market

Day five starts with free morning time where you’ll be able to explore on your own or rest at home. We’re doing an optional walk to one of our favorite coffee shops in town. Later in the day we’ll get together for a lesson on How to Go Shopping in Spanish. We’ll have our smaller group lesson followed by a delicious lunch downtown.

Think of anything you need to buy because after lunch we’re going shopping at Guanajuato’s most important shopping center, Mercado Hidalgo. You’ll get to practice what you learned in today’s lesson. Here you’ll get to by all your souvenirs for your friends and family in Spanish. We’re closing the night at home with a delicious dinner of tamales and atole.

Day 6: Asking for Directions & Nightlife in Guanajuato

After breakfast, we’re getting together for a lesson about How to Ask for Directions in Spanish followed by a small group lesson to reinforce what you learned. We’ll go out into the streets of Guanajuato to practice asking the locals for directions.

We’ll eat lunch together and have a few hours of free time to enjoy the city on your own or rest in the house. For dinner we’re doing a very fun “Tacos and Bars” tour where you’ll get to experience the nightlife of the city.

Day 7: Review & Day Trip to San Miguel de Allende

Day seven starts with heading to San Miguel de Allende. This UNESCO World Heritage site is full of art, history, and incredible views.

There, we’ll have breakfast and review the topics we worked on during the week for class. We’ll have some free time after the lessons where you’ll have time to explore SMA on your own. Optional activities include visiting the famous perish and sampling the best churros in town.

After exploring the local markets, we’ll get together for lunch downtown. San Miguel is full of incredible restaurants, so we’ll grab a bite and a drink before preparing to head back to Guanajuato for the night.

Day 8: Departure

We’ll have an easy self-serve breakfast early in the morning. This is the end of the adventure. We’ll have to pack our bags and say our goodbyes.

Check out from the house is any time before noon. Our private driver will pick you up and take you to the airport.

A: Housing varies by trip. We typically rent a house with ample space for everyone or host retreats at a hotel. You’ll be paired with another group member or your plus one. Contact us for special accommodation requests.

Q: Can I bring someone with me?

A: Yes, but your guest must also register for the retreat separately, even if they don’t participate in the activities.

Q: Are there daily formal lessons?

A: Yes, there are daily group lessons, activities, and personalized sessions based on skill level. Classes may be in the morning or afternoon, depending on the day’s activities.

Q: How long are the activities each day?

A: We have 5-6 hours of planned activities, including lessons, tours, and other events. There’s always free time to explore or rest.

Q: Is this immersion trip suitable for beginners?

A: Absolutely. We recommend Margarita Madrigal’s book for absolute beginners. Our teaching method focuses on spoken language with practical phrases and expressions, benefiting all levels.

Q: What about insurance?

A: All participants must provide proof of travel insurance. We recommend SafetyWing for coverage, which typically costs under $45 for our retreats.
