062 – Mercados y Tianguis Mexicanos | Mexican Markets and Tianguis

Maybe you don’t think of local markets as places full of culture and history, but Jim and May are here to change your mind.

This week, they chat about the definitions and differences between Mexican “mercados” and “tianguis,” which basically are two common types of markets.

Mercados tend to be inside a building and are fixed spots where vendors sell their goods daily, while a tianguis is more of what Americans call a “farmer market.”

The word “tianguis” comes from a Nahuatl background, which May goes into a bit of detail about in the episode.

Depending on where you shop, you can tell a lot about a region. In certain places, you’ll see a lot of goods made from corn, or coconut for example. You’ll find fruits that you won’t see anywhere else.

You can learn a ton from the local farmers and artisans. Check out the episode to discover more!
